Alternative Processes Exhibition Lumen Print The Everyday

Second Art Exhibition of 2021

Hey everyone. Today, I want to share with you another summary of 2021. This time, it was my second participation of a group art exhibition Fluid Spaces by The Starving Artists at 67 Aliwal Street.

Throughout the pandemic, there were food insecurity happening in all parts of the world and for Singapore, we highly depend on food imports from neighbouring countries to keep ourselves fed. However, we witnessed the ugly side of humanity with the hoarding of necessities like masks, hand sanitisers, rice, eggs, instant noodles and toilet paper!

Food has always been my first source of comfort. Made up of food ingredients and waste from my kitchen as my subjects, this series of lumen prints were placed on top of leftover darkroom photographic papers before exposing them under the sun. They were scanned before and after fixing with chemical and then processed digitally.

This “Second Chances” series is very personal to me as it was made during the pandemic last year and I was going through rough patches in my life. I wanted to highlight the increase in food waste were created during the pandemic, and how we should make small changes in our lifestyles to be sustainable for future.

In this group exhibition, the space was much smaller than the previous one however, I am glad that us, fellow exhibiting artists could work together in negotiating spaces to put up our artworks. The energy in the space was amazing and beautiful. What a way for me to begin my full-time job with a second exhibition of the year.
